Master of The Month | Ella Woodward | Gluten-free Dairy-free Energy Bites

It’s no secret that Ella Woodward, aka Deliciously Ella is one of the leaders of the new generation wellness warriors. The success of her recipe App has spread globally like wild fire, her blog is read by celebrities, her first book isn’t out till next March, but pre-orders are going nuts, she has 220K fans on Instagram (220 THOUSAND!), she’s in every top UK media publication and did I mention that Ella is drop dead gorgeous? Probably didn’t even need to mention that part, but I met her for the first time over lunch at Tanya’s Cafe, no make-up, casual gear, she was effortlessly stunning in every way.

Meet our October’s Master of the Month…

Deliciously Ella Woodward - Better Raw - Master of the Month

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY OF EATING AND DRINKING.

What I eat in a day changes all the time depending on what I’m doing but for breakfast I love porridge as its so cold at the moment! Recently I’ve been having a hot bowl of porridge with almond milk, sliced banana, fresh berries and almond butter – it’s so delicious! In the summer when it’s warmer I like having smoothies for breakfast though.

I find that lunch varies so much, I’m writing my second cookbook at the moment, which means I’m always recipe testing so lunch is nearly always different. If I’m not trying something new though I’ll have something like a quinoa bowl with mixed veggies or a marinated kale salad with avocado, homemade hummus and seeds.

For dinner I nearly always have something warm, I love warm dinners. At the moment I’m really into veggie curries and stews. I made an aubergine coconut thai curry last week, which im pretty obsessed with. I also love brown rice pasta with homemade pesto and sautéed green veggies.

WHAT (OR WHO INSPIRES YOU TO EAT WELL AND STAY HEALTHY?

I find that feeling awesome is the most inspiring thing to stay healthy! I love waking up every morning feeling energized, positive and happy and that feeling is too amazing to want to compromise on!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

I love having a positive relationship with food and don’t feel that there’s an area of the way I eat to feel is a weakness. I love dessert but it’s all made of awesome ingredients so I feel great enjoying it!

    MY TOP TIP FOR:

Improving your diet is… eat more veggies and enjoy your food, it’s so important!

Staying healthy while travelling is… being prepared, I always travel with a mini travel blender so that I can make smoothies. Plus I bring snacks like trail mix and raw energy bites with me so that I always have something to eat.

Detoxing is… not something I totally believe it, I think life is about balance and we should aim to nurture our bodies everyday.

Immunising is… taking care of your self – sleeping well, exercising, meditating and eating nourishing food.

WHAT’S THE NICEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER SAID TO YOU?

That I changed their life, it’s a pretty crazy thing to hear but its so humbling and inspiring to know that you’re truly helping people.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?

As a happy and positive influence in the people I love’s life.

IF YOU GOT TO KEEP ONLY 3 OF YOUR BELONGINGS: 1 THING FROM YOUR KITCHEN, 1 THING FROM YOUR GARDEN AND 1 THING FROM YOUR BOOKSHELF- WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

From my kitchen I would take my kitchen shelves, they’re made of such beautiful wood and they’re filled with amazing glass jars that I’ve been collecting for years. I sadly don’t have a garden so I wouldn’t take anything from there, but from my house I’d take my photo albums as they’re full of awesome memories. Finally from my bookshelves I’d take the first copy of my book as it’s something that I’m really proud of.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY FOR 3 GUESTS (DEAD OR ALIVE)- WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU SERVE?

I’d invite Kris Carr as she inspired me to change my diet and eat plant based goodness; Jo Tastula, as she’s my favourite yoga teacher, I’ve been doing her online classes for years and they’ve inspired me so much and finally I would invite Gabrielle Bernstein, I love her books on self love so much and would love to meet her. I’d probably serve my aubergine thai curry since I’m so obsessed with it at the moment, plus a marinated kale salad with sweet potatos and some chili beetroot brownies with a coconut glaze!

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THAT LIFE IS BETTER RAW?

I love mixing raw food and cooked food. There’s so much goodness in raw food so I try to include it in every meal, often I eat fresh berries and bananas in my morning porridge. slices of avocado in my lunch and a kale salad with my dinner – so there’s some raw in everything! I find this gives me amazing energy as it’s such an influx of vitamins and minerals.

I have a cafe! With my own fricken name on it!!!

It’s been so full on that I don’t remember the last time I sat down or even slept for more than 5 hours, but today… today is different.

I finally got a chance to sit on our comfy cafe banquettes, looked around at all the beautiful natural walls full of living plants, observed the hardworking team happily chatting away and then overheard a customer on the phone:

One Day Raw - A beginner's guide to living foods

One Day Raw - A beginner's guide to living foods

It feels like a whole lifetime has passed since I last wrote to you, but the irony of it is that there has been a passing of someone in my life.

The death of my young, sweet, brave and beautiful friend, Polly Noble, has affected me in more ways that I could've ever imagined...

From connecting with her in my meditation the day after and her guiding me to write this post, to resetting her passwords for the many groups and memberships, which we were both part of, to preparing raw foods in her own kitchen, with her own Superfoods, using her own recipes... for her own funeral, I spent the past two weeks in a blurry cloud of deep sadness and in total awe of her family's strength. Polly Noble life celebration
And what's the book, that's helping me through this weird and emotionally draining time?

It just so happens to be Polly's very own book 'The Cancer Journey- Positive steps to help yourself heal'. I really recommend it to anyone not only with a cancer diagnosis, but to their friends and relatives also- it's gentle, comforting, hopeful and full of interesting tips, healing techniques and delicious recipes.

She also left a little bit of a debt behind, so by purchasing this book, you'll be helping not only yourself, but also Polly's family to recover.

Here's the link again for the book, but the same goes for all of her shop items from juicers to crystals to the super awesome glass straws!

The day I learned about Polly's passing was the day I was gearing up to release my brand new website and show off what's been going on behind the scenes over the past couple of months. This didn't happen for obvious reasons, as all of my priorities shifted. I also no longer had the energy, nor the enthusiasm or any interest for that matter. And that's just not the right attitude for something which required as much love and energy as it did to produce. So I stepped away. Trusting that everything happens in its divine time, I will start making updates to my website slowly (rather than all at once) and the first stage is to share the gorgeous new eBook... Screen Shot 2014-05-27 at 16.35.26
'One Day Raw- A beginner's guide to living foods' is designed by my super clever friend, Nikki Alice and written for you, by me, in a way I wished was available to me, when I first got started with raw foods.

I did my best to write it in the most concise fashion, because a beginner's guide should be far from overwhelming.

Depending on the equipment you have handy, I've included 2 x menu plans, one for a blender and the other for a juicer, a shopping list for each, plus some of my favourite snack ideas.

I've also included a menu planning guide, eight reasons why I choose raw food, what to do after your mini cleanse and in the last paragraph of 'About Tanya' page, I've revealed something coming to London, that no one even knows of ... except you now!

I hope you find it valuable x

Master of The Month | Karen Knowler | Kale Avocado Salad Recipe

Master of The Month | Karen Knowler | Kale Avocado Salad Recipe

When I first landed on UK soil five years ago and began to quiz every person and search engine on what the raw food scene was like here, there was one name everyone seemed to be familiar with.

    The name was Karen Knowler.

Then I discovered about the ‘International Raw Food Day’ which happens every year on July 11th and the founder of it was none other than Karen Knowler. Then I began subscribing to ‘Get Fresh!’ Magazine, which instantly became my favourite read and found that its creator and former editor was also Karen!

I quickly learned about the amazing work Karen is doing locally and overseas and it became clear as to why she’s been hailed as ‘The World’s Premier Raw Food Coach’.  It has been a pleasure to interview this smart, powerful, gorgeous and ‘real’ woman.

Meet our March’s Master of the Month…

Karen Knowler _ Master of the Month _ Better Raw

Describe your typical day of eating and drinking.

As with a lot of raw foodies, almost every day is different for me. My “Eater Type” profile is Focused and Intuitive, so on one hand I like to plan for results and be organised in that way, but on the other I like to go with the flow! As you can imagine, this doesn’t always make for a straightforward time of it, but I do enjoy the contrast. That being said, I tend to start my day with a juice or smoothie, usually green, sometimes using a protein powder, or occasionally, if I have them, a young coconut smoothie, made from blending the flesh with the water. Always divine! For lunch, I tend to eat something quick and easy because I work from home and cater for myself with limited time. So lunch might be a fairly heavy smoothie if I had a juice earlier, some crudités with a dip if I’m not super-hungry, or a quick and easy salad, mixed with some beans or seeds for calories and protein. At night, I may eat out or make dinner at home. Because I have more time at night, and I’m also catering for my son, I tend to get more elaborate with my final meal of the day and so spend quality time creating a dinner I can get really excited about! While this changes from season to season, at this time of year it’s generally going to be a big juicy salad with plenty of leaves, tomatoes, red bell pepper, some red onion, beetroot, cooked asparagus and whatever else I choose to add – fat or protein. If I fancy something sweet later, which I often tend to do, then a bit of raw chocolate, something fruity and frozen, or a sweet kind of smoothie will normally hit the spot.

What (or who) inspires you to eat well and stay healthy?

Originally, my biggest inspiration was Susie Miller who founded The Fresh Network. I was 20 years old when I discovered raw food, and very soon after, I discovered Susie. To me she was the pinnacle of what great health is all about, especially because of being raw. Over the years, and as I’ve got older and have become a raw food aficionado myself, I’m now most moved by what I observe in my own body and energy levels as I try new ways of eating and exercising and basically “doing life”.
"I use my body as my guru, and make changes accordingly. If I want more information then I’ll go out and get it."
If I had to name a person… I think the person who inspires me the most around health who’s still alive on the planet today would have to be… (this is hard, by the way!)… I’d pick Tonya Zavasta as my most inspiring raw food female and Brian Clement as my most inspiring male. Both are legends in their own right. Amazing individuals, truly.

What is your biggest weakness when it comes to food and how do you deal with that?

I’m actually very proud that I successfully addressed any perceived weaknesses around food many years ago. I never overeat, only eat when I’m hungry, I rarely eat for emotion, and...
"I don’t EVER feel “bad” about what I ate, no matter what it is, because I make a conscious decision about whatever it is before I eat it."
I’m incredibly kind to myself around food, because self-love is vital. I learned that the hard way! Way too many people beat themselves up about what they eat, it’s heart-wrenching. I used to be incredibly hard on myself when I was younger about what I ate, and it only made things worse.
"Self-criticism or criticism of others is incredibly destructive - far worse than eating a slice of bread!"

So while I don’t feel that I have any debilitating weaknesses around food and eating, I definitely do receive lessons. And I learn them! And sometimes I have to learn them more than once – as we all do. And that’s okay.

Some people might consider the fact that I eat some cooked foods and other things that they might not expect to be a weakness, but I don’t see it that way. It’s a choice that I make and I do so consciously. I did 5½ years at 100% raw vegan and I loved it, but I don’t see it as sustainable for someone who lives my kind of life, and it’s not a goal for me anyway. As with all of us, this is my personal food journey, it’s ever evolving, and I take full responsibility for it. Most importantly I love it and enjoy it! And I keep learning. I truly feel free.

    My top tip for:

Improving your diet is adding green juice, daily.

Staying healthy while travelling is a time to get really back to basics. Keep it fresh and simple, don’t use gadgets – you’ll feel so much better for it.

Detoxing is a natural part of getting cleaner, and something to proactively pursue whenever you feel like your body needs a spring clean further down the line.

Immunising is... not my cup of tea, but I respect that everyone has an opinion on it and those opinions are generally pretty strong.

What's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you?

Hmm, good question! Of course, “I love you, mummy” or “You’re the best mummy in the world” is very hard to beat! But if we’re talking about my work…
Over the years it has, of course, always been lovely to hear great feedback or to hear how something I’ve said or written has changed someone’s life. None of us can hear enough of that! However, I think that the thing which sticks in my mind the most is a written testimonial on Facebook from a young woman who used my “Go Raw for a Day!” eBook to learn how to eat raw food 2-3 years ago. She shared how, for the first time in many years, she was finally able to sleep well at night and get into her car and drive without crying from pain because of eating raw for just over 24 hours. She had been diagnosed with cancer twice by age 32, and her life was a constant source of pain – literally. She was constantly taking pills for pain relief. To hear how my eBook had assisted in removing that pain from her body, heart and life was definitely one of the most amazing things I have ever heard. I actually think about her and her amazing story almost every day. I’m so glad she came back to share it with me, because most people don’t.

How would you like to be remembered?

First and foremost, as a good person. A person who lived with authenticity, the best of intentions, plenty of spirit and heart – because it’s true! Also, of course, as a wonderful mother. Being a parent is the most important job in the world and I take it very seriously every single day. If I can’t do that job right, then there’s something very wrong. Parenting comes before anything else for me.
Professionally, on one level, as someone who really impacted the modern health scene in positive and long lasting ways that enriched millions of lives. I feel good about what I have achieved so far in this field, training others is now part of that, and yet I know there is so much further to go. I also know that my work is beyond “just” raw food. Health is about so much more than what we eat. I know my work will continue to evolve, although raw food will never be out of my life or out of my heart. Eating raw is part of who I am.

If you got to keep only 3 of your belongings: 1 thing from your kitchen, 1 thing from your garden and 1 thing from your bookshelf- what would they be?

Kitchen = fridge – it’s amazing how much we rely on it. While I have a lot of great raw gadgets, I wouldn’t rate them higher than my fridge, I am still a fresh food + knife-and-chopping-board kind of gal!

Garden = my Buddha statue. Every time I look at him, all becomes well in the world, and I see him every morning as soon as I step out of my front door.

Bookshelf = This one is hard! I’m going to cheat a bit and say my Kindle as there are so many books I love that are sitting on there, but it’s still one thing! ;)

If you could host a dinner party for 3 guests (dead or alive)- who would they be and what would you serve?

Cheryl Cole + Tonya Zavasta + David Cameron (current British Prime Minister)
I would serve them the most gorgeous looking, delicious and satiating raw food menu I could possibly create that left them feeling excited, impressed and gorgeously fresh and happy – eager to find out more.

Why these three? Because Tonya would inspire Cheryl and David with her personal story, incredible wisdom and timeless beauty, and Cheryl and David specifically because they have massive worldwide influence in very different ways. There’s no end as to what could happen if all three of them were in a room together eating raw (especially with me in the mix to assist with the process!!).

Why do you believe that life is Better Raw?

Life is better raw because eating raw enlivens the body and connects you to your spirit like nothing else on earth – not even meditation.
"Eating raw truly runs deep – it’s beyond profound and 100% experiential. It’s transformation from the cellular level out."

And when you are connected to your Self - your soul - in this amazing, powerful and liberating way, you too (just like your food!) become a force of nature. You become a force of nature that not only has the power to change your own life in incredible and amazing ways and to know what it is to touch upon your full potential, but also to have a hugely positive impact on your loved ones, community and even the entire planet. For me, “better” is a massive understatement!

SWEET 'N' SUCCULENT KALE AND AVOCADO SALAD

    Serves 2

Karen Knowler kale salad recipe _ Master of the Month

This is kale like you’ve never imagined it. This meal is delicious, filling and extremely nutritious – one of the best ways to get healthy greens and fats into your body in a way that feels good and looks good too. This is one of the most popular recipes at all of my classes, and the great thing is, all you need to make it is a good sharp knife!

    INGREDIENTS
8 generous handfuls of green curly kale
Sprinkle of Celtic sea salt OR Himalayan crystal salt
    1-2 Tablespoons of olive oil
    1 ripe avocado
2 large tomatoes OR a handful of cherry or baby plum tomatoes

    OPTIONAL: 2 spring onions
OPTIONAL: 8 sundried tomatoes in oil
DRESSING: Squeeze of fresh lemon juice to taste

    DIRECTIONS
    1. Chop the kale up into tiny pieces measuring roughly 1-2cm square and put into a bowl.
    2. Add 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil plus a small sprinkling of your chosen salt to the kale and massage well into the leaves until they are glistening and look succulent. If they need more oil, add accordingly.
    3. Chop up 1 avocado into small pieces, add to the kale and massage in well, coating the leaves. It is fine to leave pieces of avocado sitting amongst the leaves as well as coating them.
    4. Chop tomatoes into small pieces and add to bowl. Similarly, finely slice the optional spring onions and sundried tomatoes – both of which I personally love.
    5. Mix all ingredients well by hand – a very tactile and delicious experience! Make sure that all ingredients are spread evenly throughout the bowl.
    6. Sprinkle with some fresh lemon juice and serve as is or pile high on to a plate and garnish with tomatoes or olives.

Master of the Month | Shazzie | Rustic Loaf with Herbs Recipe

Shazzie is a TV presenter on ‘Raw Kitchen’, author of five books including my favourite ‘Naked Chocolate’, original founder of Detox Your World- what was and still is even after she sold it in 2012- Europe’s largest superfood and raw food company. She is an eBook author, creator of multiple eCourses, the brain behind a revolutionary membership site ‘Shazzie’s VIP Room’, creator of many smart phone Apps and meditation MP3’s and mummy to a free range child, Evie.

Shazzie is a true mogul in the raw food world with a powerful voice in the health industry. But her resume [shockingly] doesn’t end there- this wonder woman is a self made millionaire with an inspiring success story! But above all else- she is a genuinely nice person. I met her for the first time when I was new to the UK and reasonably new to raw food, I though I’d be completely star struck and intimidated when I saw her at a festival, but all she had to say was ‘Oh I’ve just had one of those coconuts myself, I just love me some coconuts’ and with those few words and her energy, it was as though she sprinkled fairy dust all over the room and made everything peaceful and vibrant.

Meet our January's Master of the Month…
Shazzie _ Better Raw _ Master of the Month

Describe your typical day of eating and drinking.

I don't have typical anythings… as a single mum, my days are determined by what my daughter's doing… we have very little routine. I like to have green juice, some probiotic food or drink, some raw chocolate or smoothie with superfoods and lots of big green salads in my day, alongside a small amount of sweet fruit.

What (or who) inspires you to eat well and stay healthy?

My daughter. I want to be the best for her, so she can mirror that and be the best for herself. I guess beyond that, I want to remain an inspiration to others, so we have more inspired and inspiring people in the world. One hand up, one hand down… We're all in it together.

What is your biggest weakness when it comes to food and how do you deal with that?

I'm not organised. I am like that in all aspects of my life, and it drives me crazy sometimes. I often go out for the morning, end up out all day and can't find a thing to eat where I am. I used to carry raw food around with me in my bag but that's been replaced by my girl's things. So I deal with it by not telling myself off (it's how I am), by eating what I can when I can, and by always eating super super healthy at home because somehow my fridges are usually quite abundant.

    My top tip for:

Improving your diet is eat at least 50% (In weight) of your food raw at every meal so you get all the raw benefits.

Staying healthy while travelling is keep hydrated. Water is more important than food. You can also easily add dried green powders and superfoods to water for instant nourishment, and it weighs barely anything.

Detoxing is to enjoy it. I have written a lot on detox, and it’s so important (we should do it lots and forever) that it’s worth finding the ones you love so it’s not a chore. How about an infra red sauna, a lymph drainage massage, a tip-toe in the sea, an algae wrap or an enema?!

Immunising is building up a strong terrain (full term breastfeeding, herbs, living naturally, grounding etc) so that pathogens can’t take hold.

What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you?

Oh god! People say lovely things to me all the time, maybe I just have lovely friends and family? Strangers who know my work tell me that I'm a real inspiration, that their lives changed radically when they got involved in my stuff and that I probably don't realise how much I've changed the world with all the work I've done. It's probably true, too. I don't know, but I remember life before raw chocolate and so I'm well chuffed with that ;-)

How would you like to be remembered?

"She had a heart big enough to hold all of us"

If you got to keep only 3 of your belongings: 1 thing from your kitchen, 1 thing from your garden and 1 thing from your bookshelf- what would they be?

VitaMix (OBVS!!!) My deck (I sunbathe on it, it's against my glass south facing wall so any time it's sunny, even in winter, it's warm enough to sunbath on it. A very clever bit of divine planning, I think!) The Book Of Secrets, Osho

If you could host a dinner party for 3 guests (dead or alive)- who would they be and what would you serve?

Russell Brand — I'd serve me. I've got a free pass from my BF to have a bit of Russell, should the opportunity ever arise! Peace Pilgrim — Warm green raw soup and a foot massage John Lennon — Durian, because it's white. Imagine all the duriasms…

Why do you believe that life is Better Raw?

Ah, I've been a veggie all my adult life, a vegan for 26 years, and raw for 14 years. I eat raw because I like feeling high-energy. I am releasing enough "stuff" from my ancestral line without putting more in by eating animals! I don't judge people who do, but I don't want that for me. I want to keep this juicy, alive, inspired and visionary way of living, so my food choices have to reflect that.

    3 teaspoons sea salt
    1 small bunch fresh dill
    1 teaspoon ground cumin
    1 teaspoon dried parsley

Grind the flax seeds (using the grain jug if you have one) in a high speed blender (such as the VitaPrep) or a coffee/spice grinder. Soak the psyllium in 480ml / 2 cups water until the water is absorbed.

Set aside a teaspoon of salt, a teaspoon of dried herbs and a couple of teaspoons of maca for sprinkling on the top.

Mix all other ingredients together, either in a food processor with an S blade or in a large bowl by hand (or large spoon).

Knead the dough. Form into a round loaf, or shape of your choice.

Sprinkle with the remaining sea salt, dried herbs and the maca powder (looks like dusted flour!).

Dehydrate at 115° F or 46° C for 18-24 hours, (until crispy on the outside).

Due to the way the loaf is shaped and the nature of the bread, it’s preferable to be a bit chewy inside.

Slice or rip into chunks for soups, sandwiches and buttery spreads.
