A juice to calm your nerves and cleanse your body

A juice to calm your nerves and cleanse your body

Here's what I woke up to yesterday...

    DSC02620

I know! I have the best life.

Yes Yes I do! And it’s about to get even better. I am in New Zealand with the best in-laws a girl could dream of, the most amazing parents I spent all of my previous lives searching for, my bestie all the way from London, tomorrow my soon-to-be husband arrives, then my sister and her husband land from New York, then more friends and family will be coming together for a day I’ve been dreaming up ever since I can remember.

During what everyone keeps telling me is supposed to be the craziest, busiest, out-of-control time of my life, I am feeling pretty calm and collected.

There are many reasons I could factor into this state of being, but one that stands out to me the most right now is a mini juice cleanse. I did it back in London to reboot my system, release the toxins, mineralise my cells and calm my nerves.

Here is the recipe which featured more than any others…

    SNOW PEA SHOOT DETOX JUICE

    DSC02342

    2 handfuls snow pea shoots
    10-15 snow peas
    2 pears
    1 apple
    1 large cucumber
    1.5 inch ginger root

    – Slice all the ingredients to fit your juicer chute.
    – Juice and enjoy.

My Raw Food Protein Shake for the Slovakian Slopes

My Raw Food Protein Shake for the Slovakian Slopes

Christmas 2013 was a bit different for us.. in a really really good way, and I have my Facebook family to thank for that! We've always wanted to try out Eastern Europe for skiing, so I came to you guys for location ideas. Jasna in Slovakia was by far the most recommended by you all and now there are TEN more satisfied and enthusiastic Slovakia advertisers...
We may not have been so lucky with snow fall and were only left to dream about what fresh powder of the Tatras National Park would be like, but nevertheless we got an entire week of skiing under own belt. We even managed to visit the most amazing heated outdoor Aquapark Tatralandia, the gorgeous spa and sauna facilities of the Druzba Hotel, late night disco (YES- disco!) at Route 66 and celebrate Christmas the Slovakian way on the 24th. Here are some of my favourite pics:
Eastern Europe + cold winter + general love of all things meaty… isn’t exactly the best combo for a raw food enthusiast, so I had to come prepared.
Fruit, veggies and tea- you can get anywhere, but I also travelled with a bottle of Liquid Chlorophyll, my own pH Booster for smoothies and salads, maca capsules, Pura Vida’s breads, my dehydrated pineapple crackers, curried kale chips and granola (from eBook Nourished- Comforting Raw Foods for Winter), a Personal Blender from Tribest and a few other ingredients required for my daily Protein Shake.
It is this Protein Shake, which so many of you showed interest for on Facebook, so I decided to shoot a little video and show you exactly what I put into it and why. Enjoy it on YouTube>>

If you follow @BetterRaw on any of the social networks, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what it is I eat while travelling, but here are a couple of ideas either way…

Me and Santa's Little Helper, making a Rosemary Nut Roast and Mushroom Jus (both from Festive eBook).
A trio of dehydrated snacks which kept us going on the slopes.
An epic find at the top of the mountain, where they make fresh ginger tea with unlimited refills.
And of course my protein shake full of immunising properties.

Raw Chocolate Nut Shake + Tribest's Soyabella Review

Raw Chocolate Nut Shake + Tribest's Soyabella Review

I recently had an exciting opportunity to work with Tribest in order to develop and photograph a selection of recipes for their beautiful new website- www.tribest.co.ukIf you haven't checked it out yet, make sure you do- there's a whole collection of free recipes for you to enjoy! Here is the delicious list so far:
    Fruit Leathers
    Raw Chocolate Cookies
    Cheesy Kale Crisps
    Italian Flaxseed Crackers
    Antioxidant Punch Smoothie
    Energy Burst Smoothie
    Oranges and Cream Smoothie
    Raw Chocolate Nut Shake (below)
    Ultimate Beauty Smoothie
    Very Berry Summer Smoothie
    Virgin Pina Colada
    Cucumber Cooler Juice
    Down to Earth Immuniser Juice
    Kidney Supporting Juice
    The Classic Green Juice
Prior to this project, I was already using, loving and recommending Tribest's products, such as GreenStar Elite juicer and Sedona Dehydrator. Their range is so much bigger though, that luckily for me I got to play with all of it!
One product in particular that I want more people to know about is Tribest's Soyabella. It's an elegant little piece of equipment, which doesn't take up much bench space, looks like a stylish kettle, but is actually a nut milk maker…
It's super easy to use. I just soaked my almonds in water overnight, exactly as I always do when using the blender+strainer method. As you can see below, Soyabella has all the measurements indented inside and on the grinder cup, so you'll always know where to aim for that perfect homemade milk...
The motor head has a patented helical grinding blade and you simply insert it into the grinding cup. The downside is that you can't load it with too many nuts at once or you'll never get this blade in. I had to wiggle and shake my way in with the blade to make sure that it's screwed onto the grinding cup properly. After a couple of times, this becomes second nature. You then imply lower the blade head + grinding cup into the body...
I love it how this isn't rocket science and you can work out what to do without any instructions, rather using very clearly marked buttons. The cord is also detachable, which has come in handy when I packed up my Soyabella to take along to workshops and also to store nicely on my kitchen bench.
After 3-4 whizzes (this was literally a total of 40 seconds, no more), you have a ready creamy and delicious nut milk right inside the jug, while the nut pulp stays in the grinder cup. It's easy to pour, easy to clean and the milk is quite possibly the tastiest I've had after using a variety of different methods to produce it...
    Favourite part:
Aside from a clean, easy, no-fuss, no-mess way to make my nut milk, I love it that I can use Soyabella for making my hot chocolates! There is no cooking involved, so I can still have my hot chocolate drink- raw, but since I'm not using my hands to strain the milk, I won't burn them either when using hot water.
    Least favourite part:
The pulp left inside the grinder cup stays pretty wet. Sometimes this is actually the best part about this process, because I add the wet pulp directly to my other recipes, like raw cakes and cookies, however the rest of the time, I find myself using a spoon to manually press the ground up nuts into the grinder, so the rest of the liquid can seep out of the tiny holes.
    The verdict:
Get it! It's affordable, it's stylish, it's easy to use and produces delicious, raw, healthy, lactose-free, nutrient-rich nut milks. Tribest are also offering my readers a generous 25% off of any of their products including this baby, until 31st December 2013. Just use the code TANYA25 in your shopping basket! Check out what else you can get discount codes on before the end of the year, here>>
And as for a recipe that you could make with a nut milk, try this crazy tasty…
    RAW CHOCOLATE NUT SHAKE
    Serves 2

    2 cups hazelnut milk
    2 bananas, peeled and frozen
    3 medjool dates, pitted
    3 tbsp cacao powder
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
optional: 1/2 tsp vanilla bean powder

    – Transfer all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high.
    – Serve immediately.

Tanya’s Top Tip: You can use any non dairy milk here, but I chose hazelnut, because there is just that something so dreamy about the hazelnut and chocolate combination. Make your own nut milks by using Soyabella.

My top 5 Superfoods for immunising during winter and always

Touch wood, but I haven't been sick with either a cold or a flu in over five years now.

If you asked for my secret five years ago, I would've put it down solely to green smoothie drinking. Then over time, as my diet evolved and my curiosity for superfoods, wholefoods and supplements grew, I am now confident of this:

The immune system gets stronger with variety.

Variety of the foods you put in your mouth, variety in your eating patterns (think detoxing and fasting), variety of seasons and temperature (think bare feet in winter and shower tempering), your exercise regime, work breaks, things you look at, places you travel to, conversations you have and so on.

But the number one thing is and will always be- something we do and think about more often than anything else- eating.

As a coach I often find myself reminding others to listen to their bodies, not their heads, for what they want to eat. But I do get that sometimes you have to first taste a certain food to store it in your body's wisdom library for later reference. I also get that some health foods sound too alien for a willing wallet, so hoping to decipher the code for you by sharing five immunising foods which my body is loving this winter season and why I think that you should try them too…

    CAMU CAMU BERRY
    photo: source
ABOUT: Camu Camu is a bush growing in the black water rivers of the Amazon, which produces berries about the size of large grapes. They get picked at peak ripeness and frozen in the boat that collects them. Back at the plant, they are thawed, peeled and dried to a powder, which we are lucky to buy around the world. To me this is an absolute wonder food. It's about 60 times higher in Vitamin C than oranges, making it the highest source of Vitamin C in the world! So just 1/2 teaspoon of dry powder provides almost 400% of RDA.
HOW TO TAKE: I always keep some Camu Camu in the cupboard and only find myself taking a little before flying or at a change of every season to keep my immune system strong. Luckily I don't have the need for regular use, but Elliot is the one usually under the weather because of his work. As soon as he starts to feel like a cold is coming on, I get him to take 2 teaspoons of Camu Camu mixed with 2 teaspoons of Bee Pollen and the next day he is back to normal. Many of my clients take a teaspoon each day in smoothies or juices for 2 weeks to immunise and then just 1/2 teaspoon to maintain their health.

    BEE POLLEN
    photo: source
ABOUT: Bee Pollen is a superfood used by vegetarian and even non-vegetarian athletes, because of its mega high protein content. It has 20 of 22 essential amino acids!! What's more is that to me this is like a complete food also being full of carbohydrates, Vitamins A, B and C and minerals like magnesium, calcium, copper, iron, silica, phosphorous, sulphur, chlorine and manganese. It's been known to ease and cure many allergies, to energise, lower blood pressure, improve digestion and clear problematic skin.

HOW TO TAKE: As you've just read above, I mix it with a little Camu Camu, because the berry powder is tangy and the pollen is sweet, so they make a tasty crumble. You can eat it as is- straight from a spoon, spread it on a cracker together with almond butter, add to smoothies, cookies, energy balls, granola and anything else you'd like a little taste of honey with. Generally a tablespoon a day is a good amount, but you can't overdose on the stuff, so enjoy to your heart's desire.

    UDO'S CHOICE OIL BLEND
    photo: source
ABOUT: "Our bodies need essential fatty acids omega 3 and 6 for maintaining optimum heart health, brain function, supple joints and a strong immune system. They are called ‘essential’ because our bodies cannot produce them -- they need to be included in our diets. However, with modern day food processing and cooking methods which damage or destroy these delicate essential fats, our sources of “healthy”, undamaged omega oils are limited. Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend provides a simple and convenient way of ensuring the whole family can obtain these important nutrients by mixing it in with foods or your favourite smoothie (great for getting the omega oils into kids!)"

INGREDIENTS: Flaxseed oil, Sunflower seed oil, Sesame seed oil, Coconut oil, Evening primrose oil (13mg gla/15ml), Soy lecithin, Rice bran and rice germ oils, Oat bran and oat germ. [From organically grown plant seeds. Gluten free].

HOW TO TAKE: You really don't need to add it to anything, as the oil is actually lovely tasting as it is and it's easy to take 1-2 tablespoons daily for beautiful skin and healthy hair amongst many benefits. Otherwise you can stir that amount into salad dressings, smoothies and sauces.

    MACA ROOT
    photo: source
ABOUT: Maca is a root vegetable from Peru, which quickly gained popularity out these ways, when people discovered its hormonal balancing, libido enhancing and fertility promoting powers. It is also an amazing adaptogen, which means that it helps the body adapt to stress and therefore strengthen the immune system. It is recommended for men and women for maintaining good health and protein intake (yes it contains high amount of essential amino acids!) or for treatment purposes for those with anaemia, memory loss, chronic fatigue syndrome, erectile disfunction, menstrual issues, osteoporosis and depression.
HOW TO TAKE: Maca is energising, so it is best taken in the morning with breakfast. You can get it in capsule form if you find the taste too strong. I quite enjoy both the aroma and the taste in its powdered form and usually put a teaspoon into my breakfast nut-shake or a hot spiced chocolate. I also often sprinkle it over granola and add it to raw cakes, crackers, sauces and smoothies. I haven't heard any overdosing stories, but personally feel that 3 teaspoons per day would be my limit.

    pH BOOSTER ALKALISING GREENS
    photo: source
ABOUT: pH Booster is in my opinion the best possible mix for alkalising superfood powders EVER! Naturally I would say that of course, it being my own product, however I put it together only because there was nothing so potent on the market for my annual course 'Acid-Alkaline Breakthrough'. I wanted the most effective way of boosting pH levels, while mineralising, immunising and detoxing all at the same time. The result was this combo of 22 greens, herbs, grasses and vegetables. Every element is either certified organic or free from agro-chemicals and totally raw - all ingredients are juiced and/or dried below 110 degrees F to preserve their nutrients and enzymes. It is widely known that no disease can claim a body in its alkaline state, so it is very important to test your pH levels on litmus paper and make sure you don't tip over to the acidic side. This is where the pH Booster plays a crucial part.
INGREDIENTS: Wheatgrass powder, Barley Grass Powder, Alfalfa Herb Powder, Bilberry Leaf Powder, Black Walnut Leaf Powder, Couchgrass Powder, Dandelion Leaf Powder, Ground Lemongrass, Marshmallow Root Powder, Meadowsweet Herb Powder, Ground Pau d'Arco Inner Bark, Ground Peppermint, Rosehip Powder, Ground Rosemary, Red Sage Powder, Ground Thyme, White Willow Bark Powder, Horsetail Powder, Slippery Elm Powder, Celery Seed Powder, Chlorella Powder, Spirulina Powder.

HOW TO TAKE: As the Acid-Alkaline Breakthrough course is 28 days, I suggest 1 teaspoon 2-4 times daily. You'll need 2 of these 200g bottles for the full duration of the course. Otherwise for general good health- a teaspoon a day -mixed in water, smoothies, juices or sprinkled on cereals- is a great way to enjoy the powder.

Master of the Month | Jason Vale | Turbo Salad Recipe

Being a high-energy coach, it is very rarely that I look for inspiration outside of myself when it comes to liveliness. To me energy is like magic. It is like a superpower. Mysterious to observers, but obvious to the possessor of this high energy, because we know, that anyone is capable of such magic, you've just gotta go and create it.

Jason Vale, aka The Juice Master, is one of those magicians. This man is a legend in the world of wellness, he is the leading expert in the UK and is one of the most influential people when it comes to juicing and health. He is the number one best-selling author of 10 books, DVDs and CDs on juicing, health, fitness and junk food addiction. [I'm a proud owner and enthusiastic reader of nearly all of them! But hey, there are quite a few I tell you]. Jason sold over 2 million books worldwide and is most famous for his 7lbs In 7 days - Super Juice Diet, which hit the number one best-selling spot of ALL books on Amazon, knocking out the Da Vinci Code!

Meet our December's Master of the Month…

Describe your typical day of eating and drinking.

I tend to get up and start the day with a hot lemon then I will have some kind of juice for breakfast. Maybe a Ginger Zinger or a green juice. I typically have a salad for lunch and a Smoothie and with a cooked vegetable soup or warm salmon salad for dinner.

Who inspires you to eat well and stay healthy?

Still the same reason I got into juicing. I was really fed up with being overweight, and dealing with psoriasis, hayfever and eczema and feeling so lethargic. I read a little book on juicing by Doctor Norman Walker and it literally changed my thinking about food overnight and my life from then on turned very juicy! I began juicing, as a novice at first, I went a bit crazy, drunk buckets of carrot juice and even turned bright orange! But even as a novice I noticed things started to improve; my skin started to clear up, I had more energy, I was losing weight and feeling absolutely amazing. So I began studying it, refined my recipes and diet and slowly became the “Master” of juicing (that’s what my friends used to call me, and it just stuck!).

There was me, a guy from Peckham in London drinking lots of juice every day with everyone thinking I was a few strawberries short of a trifle, but I didn’t care, I was a changed man. I wrote my first book Slim for Life, sent it into Harper Collins, and the next day they called me up said it was the best thing they’d read on the subject in 25 years!

7 books later I’m still as passionate as ever that if I can do it, so can everyone else.

What is your biggest weakness when it comes to food and how do you deal with that?

Without being arrogant I don't have any weaknesses. I never say no to having anything otherwise that will be all I want. It's about managing what you want. I will be good, eat well 80% of the time, but if I go out for dinner and want chips I will have chips, it's fueling your body the best way you can 80% of the time.

    My top tip for:

Improving your diet is… furnishing the body with the finest, easiest to ingest nutrients on the planet, and juicing retains 95% of the nutrients found in fruit and vegetables. Introduce a juice a day to your diet..

Staying healthy while travelling is… easy if you take time to plan it. I make juices and store them in containers so it will last me throughout the day. I make salads, have fruit to snack on.

Detoxing is… removing the toxins in your body and supplying the body with the finest nutrition in the fastest possible time. I make sure I do one of mu juice programmes at least once a month to make sure my body is fighting fit.

Immunizing is… eat plenty of these:
Avocados – the only complete fruit in the world in that it contains every major food group and a huge array of nutrients.
Beetroot – a blood builder, liver cleanser and beetroot juice is medically proven to lower blood pressure within half an hour of consuming it, amazing!
Apples – more vitamins than you can shake a bunch of grapes at and a real staple for many of my juice recipes because of it’s all round high nutrient content.
Carrots – the anti-cancer king and a real winner on the mineral front. In combination with apple juice, it tastes amazing and is fantastic for you too.
Last one – wheatgrass – you cant put it in a centrifugal juicer but juiced fresh through a masticator or in powder form it is phenomenal for the body. In fact whole communities in America live off wheatgrass juice and have huge cancer success rates with it too . Amazingly powerful.

How would you like to be remembered?

I have come up with 3…

    1) Attitude of Gratitude – More important than anything else is the appreciation of life and the position we have been granted. We are in the top 1% in the world when it comes to wealth, we have access to the best foods in the world and live in a free society. That fact alone is so often under appreciated. Also, some people might be surprised to hear that a lot of my books are more about the psychology of food than about juicing. We’ve spent so many years of our lives being subtly brainwashed by BIG Food and BIG Drink companies that it’s so important to try and untangle this web of clever and deceptive advertising. Appreciating and being grateful for everything you have right now and everything that will come into your life, even if you dont do anything else, will have the biggest impact of your life and health. It’s no surprise that some of the oldest people in the world are often the happiest and most grateful.

    2) Movement is Life – More important than diet even, is the necessity to move your body every day. We have become a nation of people now sat behind a desk staring at a screen all day. You MUST make sure you get out and do something active a couple of times a day. Movement keeps the lymph system working, removing toxins and dead cells and an increased heat rate and oxygen are like superfuel to the body. I once met an 80 year old man that beat me 6-0 three times in a row at tennis. Now, I consider myself pretty good at tennis but this guy was phenomenal and I asked him what his secret was. He just said one thing, “move your body every day. I’ve been doing that all my life and I’m just as fit as I ever was”. What a living testament to his own statement! It is ridiculous that you even see kids these days unable to run, play and move because they’ve become a nation obsessed with computer games and TV, it’s heat breaking. So tip number 2, MOVE your body daily.

    3) Nature’s Liquid Fuel – We are the ONLY species on the entire earth that cooks our food. I have never once met and gorilla that can cook me a good BBQ and I don’t think I ever will. The life force that the animals of the world live off, including us, is to be found in raw, uncooked fruits, vegetables, plants, nuts and seeds. Now in today’s modern world it’s pretty impossible to consume entirely raw foods, or huge amounts of fruits and vegetables. That’s where juicing comes in, you are giving your body all the vitamins and minerals it needs in liquid form, that goes straight to the cells where its needed. A combination of the right attitude, daily exercise and the right nutrition and you have the perfect combination to life-long health.

If you got to keep only 3 of your belongings: 1 thing from your kitchen, 1 thing from your garden and 1 thing from your bookshelf- what would they be?

I would take my juicer from my kitchen, vegetables from my garden and my ipad from my bookshelf

If you could host a dinner party for 3 guests (dead or alive) - who would they be and what would you serve?

I can't answer this as there's just too many people to invite!

Why do you believe that life is Better Raw?

There are many foods out there touted as the new superfood, and there certainly are some foods that contain a super concentration of nutrients and antioxidants for example. BUT in all honesty all fruits and vegetables are superfoods really. They all nourish the body, provide an array of vitamins and minerals to help the body grow and repair and they are what our ancestors have been living on for years! People also ask me what particular juice I can recommend for their ailment, but I’m a real believer in the One Disease One Body approach, in that the body can not selectively heal. If you are feeding it an abundance of nutrients rich in live foods it wont cure one ailment without helping the body fix the rest.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Our Master of the Month shares his favourite raw food recipe...

    JASON'S TURBO SALAD
    Serves 1-2

Why this is good for you:
    - This salad is rich in silica, helping the hair, nails, and skin.
    - The cabbage is superb for many digestive and intestinal problems, such as bowel infections, parasites and colitus, and the broccoli is one of nature’s true super-foods, helpful for high blood pressure, liver problems and constipation.
    - The grated carrot helps to reduce inflammation of the mucus membranes in the intestines and respiratory tract. This really is one hell of a power salad!

    Ingredients:
    1 cup spinach leaves
    1 cup rocket leaves
    ½ cup watercress
    1/8 cup red cabbage, grated
    ½ carrot, grated

    4 black or green olives
Egg cupful of cold-pressed olive oil
    Balsamic vinegar
    1 lemon
    1 lime
Flesh of 1 large avocado, diced into large chunks

    Instructions:
    - Place the spinach, rocket and watercress leaves on a plate or in a small salad bowl.
    - Top with the red cabbage, carrot, cucumber, broccoli, pepper and olives.
    - Add olive oil and balsamic vinegar and juice from half the lemon and lime. Toss together.
    - Place the avocado chunks on top and squeeze over the lemon juice from the remaining lemon and lime.
