GINGER - THE ROOT TO IMMUNITY (PLUS A SIMPLE JUICE RECIPE)

    raw food recipe

    Happy New Year loves!

This is officially my very first post for 2013, so I wanted to make it a goodie and share one of my [not so] secret tips on how I went from getting a cold at every change of season to working harder than ever before and never feeling anything that even resembles a sore throat in FIVE years now.

I won't deny that it's due to much much more than just one thing- green smoothies, raw foods, balanced meals, exercise, healthy thinking, periodic detoxing, skipping in the rain, aloe vera, forgiveness, high fives, group hugs, food combining, alkalising, laughing, blowing bubbles, and the list goes on- but if I had to single out vital player in all of this, then ginger it is!

So if you've had a ginger root staring at you from the supermarket shelves and needed one good reason to add it to your diet, how about three...

    Natural anti-inflammatory.
Ginger- like turmeric, hop extract, ashwagandha, boswellia and aloe vera- helps to reduce the overproduction of leukotrients that cause inflammation. It is a powerful supplement for reducing pain and swelling for those with arthritis, especially when taking 500-2000mg or eating/juicing a ½ inch of fresh ginger root daily. Ginger essential oil drops in your bath will help with aching muscles and joints.

    Digestion’s buddy.
If you suffer with minor or serious indigestion, your first step will always involve a detox. Whether you decide on a spring clean for your body, a strict change of diet or a serious intestinal tract clear out (involving colon cleansing and taking fibres such as psyllium husks, herbs, oat or beet fibre, incorporated with juicing and exercise), you will soon notice that ginger is on the menu. And no wonder every expert recommends it- ginger has the power to fire up your digestive juices, whilst improving the absorption and assimilation of nutrients, so you don’t only get the bad stuff out, but keep the vital stuff in.

    Immunity booster.
Don’t wait to get congested and unfit for work to resume to a ginger honey tea (although- excellent idea!), but add ginger to your diet on a regular basis and let your immune system know that you are serious about kicking bugs and viruses. Ginger promotes healthy sweating, where a potent germ-fighting agent (dermicin) produced in healthy sweat gets transported to the skin’s surface. This not only removes the toxins from inside the body, but protects it against invading microorganisms from the outside. If you suffer from motion sickness or nausea, this wonder root will be the best therapy to eliminate gastrointestinal distress, calm and prevent the symptoms.

You may remember me posting this photo to Facebook before my long flight, followed by a 15 hour bus journey to Ecuador (note the ginger extract I used and click on the image to get it):

"All other antioxidants are jealous of my breakfast right now! I'm flying this morning, so got up extra early to make this beet+carrot+celery juice. But first- the double shot of berry aloe vera drink & ginger extract. Jet lag who?"

Then Christmas rolled around just as quickly as it went. Elliot and I, along with Tim and Kirsty (our London family for the third Christmas already!) decided to spend the festive break in Prague.

I've dreamed of this city for far too long to spend the time blending and juicing while we are there, so left all the gadgets at home. But not before making a batch of Ginger Heaters (as seen in 'Nourished- Comforting Raw Food Recipes For Winter' eBook) and making sure I get my dose of immunity boosting before the trip. Here's the recipe:

    Ginger Heaters
    Yields 4 shooters

    10 inch ginger root
    2 apples
    small bunch of mint leaves
Juice all the ingredients, stir and pour into shot glasses.
Drink right away to warm up.
Here are a couple of shots from the stunning city herself (more images, including the raw food restaurant we discovered in Prague, see here>>)...

FROM SPICY ICELAND TO SPICED HOT CHOCOLATE

Last week I welcomed my fifth digital baby into the world, called 'Nourished- Comforting Raw Foods for Winter'. This project was dear to my heart, as I was born and raised in Russia, until I was eleven and we immigrated to a different climate on the opposite side of the world.
Now, years later and having completed a near 360 degree turn- back to the white winter, which tends to have magnetic powers over me- I am in the UK. And loving it! But as I dive deeper into the ever evolving world of nutrition, I realise how real of an issue it is for the majority of the population to stay healthy when it's cold outside.
These days, imports from all around the world ensure that our supermarket shelves don't look too dissimilar week in and week out, so most people won't even be able to answer which foods belong to which season. We become disconnected with nature and no wonder illnesses snake their way into our homes.
I created every single one of the 39 recipes in Nourished especially for those living in cold winter climates. You will find out what vegetables, fruits and nuts grow naturally at the beginning of winter and which grow at the end; you'll get a whole collection of my top tips to keep yourself warm, while staying raw; and best of all- you will be pleasantly surprised that most of the recipes are not only prepared with seasonal produce, they are warming too (see a sample recipe below). All while being 100% raw, nutritious, flavourful, satisfying and free from gluten, wheat, soy, dairy or anything made in a lab.
That's right Winter- now let's see what you've got to say about that!
And just as I release this Winter eBook on Thursday, I suppose it only makes sense to celebrate in Iceland on Friday. Surely.
Oh my, what a country Iceland is. We were caught in a snow storm for the larger part of our trip and even that didn't stop us from discussing a speedy return to the land of the oldest known geysers, renewable geothermal and hydropower energy sources, and the clearest waters on earth.
I'll be uploading more photos (including our visit to Glo, a raw food cafe in Reykjavik), here on Facebook, but for now you can view some highlights below...

We got back to a balmy [in comparison] London in the evening and all I felt like was something warm, comforting, creamy and nourishing. Good thing I usually keep soaked almonds on hand by keeping them in the fridge in water (change the water every three days and they will keep for a month), so the best option presented itself. And it so happened to be right out of my brand new eBook Nourished...

    SPICED HOT CHOCOLATE

    1 cup almonds, soaked overnight
4 cups pure water (2 cups cold, 2 cups hot)
    ½ cup pitted dates
    ¼ avocado
    2 tbsp raw cacao powder
    1 tbsp manuka honey/agave nectar
    ¾ tsp cayenne pepper

Rinse the nuts, drain and blend with 2 cups cold water.
Strain the liquid through a nut bag/cheese cloth/stocking to remove the pulp.
Pour the strained milk back into blender and add the rest of ingredients including the hot water, blend on high.
    Enjoy immediately.

4 Smoothie recipes, which even I was surprised to repeat

When it comes to my breakfast, I'm pretty unadventurous and tend to stick to smoothies.

But when it comes to smooooothies... I rarely make the same one twice! Even the good old fashioned green monster can be a thousands different shades, textures and flavours. And it usually is.

So not only is it out of norm for me to repeat the same drink recipe again, it's kinda a big deal, as nothing else will be bigger proof to you that you've stumbled across a real keeper.

Here are four of my recipes, which I've proudly repeated and shamelessly indulged in...

    BLUEBERRY BREAKFAST
    (Serves 2)

    2,5 cups walnut milk
1/2 cup rolled jumbo oat flakes
    1,5 cups fresh blueberries
    1 frozen banana
    2 tbsp yacon syrup
    1 tsp vanilla powder

When freezing the banana, peel it first and break into chunks. Make walnut milk the same way as almond milk, found here. Transfer all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

    ORANGE CREAM
    (Serves 2)

    2,5 cups poppy seed milk
    4 oranges, peeled and frozen
    zest from 3 oranges
    2 tbsp baobab powder
    6 liquid stevia drops

First zest the oranges and then peel and chop, them ready to freeze. You can freeze the zest too if it makes it easier to have everything in one place. Make the poppy seed milk the same way as almond milk here, but instead of 1 cup of nuts to 3 cups of water, use 1 cup of seeds to 4 cups of water. Blend everything into a cream.

    PINEAPPLE PARSLEY
    (Serves 2)

    1 small ripe pineapple
    1 large handfull of parsley
water as needed, or simply juice everything without it

Peel the pineapple and chop it up for the blender. Depending on blender quality, you make like to discard of the middle core also. Blend everything, adding a little water if required or simply juice the ingredients instead.

    BEET IT SMOOTHIE
    (Serves 2)

    2 cups almond milk
1/4 cup beetroot juice (about 1/2 large beet, juiced)
    2 cups frozen strawberries
    4 medjool dates, pitted
    1 tsp vanilla powder

Juice the beetroot and if you make extra, it will always keep in the fridge for various other recipes (such as this one) for up to 10 days. Make the almond milk as I've done here. Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
